Scott Gilmer

January 7, 1960 — February 4, 2023

Goodland, KS

Scott Allen Gilmer, born January 7, 1960 in Denver, Colorado passed away at his home in Goodland, Kansas on February 4, 2023 at the age of 63.

Scott grew up and graduated from Decatur Community High School with the class of 1979 in Oberlin, Kansas. Upon graduation, he moved to Goodland, Kansas to enroll at the NWK Technical School in the Advanced Autobody and Mechanics program graduating in 1981. Scott began his 25-year career in autobody repair at Lonny’s Quality Autobody of Goodland, Kansas. Scott’s deep mechanical knowledge served him well in a transition to Kansasland Tire & Service, and most recently, in the service department of Frontier Ag. His knowledge, talent, and dedication in the industry quickly turned an after-hours hobby into a profitable side business, of spray-in truck bedliners known as Scott’s Moonlight Liners. Scott’s tireless work ethic and compassion to serve others, particularly those in need, led him to serve as a volunteer firefighter for 15+ years, he donated blood when able, and was always helping neighbors and friends with anything they needed.

When Scott wasn’t working, he could be found in his happy place…outdoors, where he found peace and solace.   He spent time in the country cutting firewood, trapping wild animals for farmers and ranchers, and enjoyed taking long drives in his truck with his dog. Scott had love and respect for the animals and the land. His favorite times of the year were opening weekend for both pheasant and deer hunting seasons, where he enjoyed time in the fields with his closest friends and made the most treasured memories with his children and grandchildren.  Scott was a long-time member of the BPOE #1528 Elks Lodge, had a passion for collecting antiques and you could always find him tinkering with something in his shop.  Scott never sat still, he was always busy doing something and was one of the toughest and hardest working people any of us will ever know.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His passing is a great loss, and he will be deeply missed by many, but the memories will live on in all of us and his spirit will carry on as we lend a helping hand to our neighbors as he did.

Scott is survived by his wife of 29 years, Nancy (Parke); daughter Shandi (Dennis) Shaw and their children Aiyana and Hunter of Largo, Florida; son Zane (Rachel) Gilmer and their children Hollyn and Greyson of Aurora, Colorado; step-son Eric (Jordan) Mai and their children Hayden, Derek and Logan of Peachtree Corners, Georgia; step-son Chad (Gwen) Mai and their children Tresten, Roman and Georgia of Goodland, Kansas; and step-son Bryan (Sara) Mai and their children, Catherine and William of Overland Park, Kansas; and sister Kathy Gilmer of Haxtun, Colorado.

He is preceded in death by his parents Walt and Marilyn Gilmer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Scott’s honor are encouraged to be sent to the funeral home to benefit two of his favorite organizations: Hunting Heritage Group (youth hunt program) and High Plains Roosters Chapter #663 of Pheasants Forever and may be left at the services or sent to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N.
