Sylvia Hurst

Longtime Goodland, Kansas resident Sylvia Louise Hurst, 88, died Friday, December 12, 2014, at Goodland Regional Medical Center.

She was born September 27, 1926, on the family farm in Rawlins County, Kansas, the daughter of Eva May (Eicher) and Milton William Biggs.  She attended a one-room school house in Rawlins County, and then graduated from Brewster High School.

On August 11, 1946, she and Joseph Clinton Hurst, Jr. were married on a farm north of Levant, Kansas.  The couple moved to Fruita, Colorado, and from there, travelled wherever J.C’s work took them in the area.  In 1954, they settled in Goodland.  She was a homemaker, and later, a cook for USD 352.  She was a member of First Christian Church and Christian Women’s Fellowship.

Preceding her in death were her husband Joe Hurst, who died December 18, 1995; daughter Loretta Pearce; son Eldon Hurst; grandson Espiririon Aguilar; and her parents.

Surviving family includes her children Betty Smith and her husband John of Waukomis, Oklahoma; Tom Hurst and his wife Kim of Commerce City, Colorado; Marie Hurst and her husband James Posney of Goodland; Neal Hurst and his wife Phyllis of Thornton, Colorado; Bertha Aguilar and her husband Louis of Goodland; Harry Hurst of Goodland; Arthur Hurst and his wife Cindy of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Ruth Ontiveroz and her husband Abel of Goodland; Mary Ann Bess and her husband James of Aurora, Colorado; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; siblings Lola Andrews of Indianapolis, Indiana; Jim Biggs of East Laurinburg, North Carolina; Marie Ditges of Torrington, Wyoming; Walt Biggs and his wife Bonnie of Brewster, Kansas.

The funeral will be Saturday, December 20, at 10:00 AM MT, at First Christian Church in Goodland, with Pastor Chris Edwards officiating.  Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Friends may share their respects one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be designated to First Christian Church, and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N Main, Goodland, KS  67735-1555.
