Richard Scheopner

Richard Allen Scheopner, 63, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 11, 2012 after a valiant fight with cancer.

Richard was born to Clarence and Clara (Huber) Scheopner on August 10, 1949.  He attended Goodland schools and enjoyed participating in athletics with his talent in football earning him a place on the team at Kansas State Teachers College (now known as Emporia State University).  After college, he joined his father in the family Culligan Soft Water business.  At the time of his death, Richard was president of Scheopner's Water Conditioning, Inc. serving communities in northwest Kansas and eastern Colorado.  He also farmed with his father for many years.

On July 26, 1969, Richard married Diane Stone in Haysville, KS, and they celebrated forty-three years of marriage together.

Richard was an avid sports fan and worked as a referee for both basketball and football for twenty-seven years.  He also enjoyed playing golf, camping, and boating with his family.  He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Tootsie Rollers Klown Club.  He was active in the community as a member of Kiwanis and Elks and served on the board for Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas.

Richard is survived by his wife Diane of the home, son Jason Scheopner and his wife Jessica of Omaha, NE, son Ryan Scheopner and his wife Sarah of Goodland, daughter Kendra Aspegren and her husband Derek of Omaha, NE, and daughter Kyla Sheldon and her husband Loren of Goodland.  Other survivors include eight grandchildren, William, Juliana, Jonathan, Catherine, Claire, Rhett, Allyson, and Trent, as well as three brothers, Harold Scheopner of Atchison, KS, John Scheopner of Clay Center, KS, and Andy Scheopner of Goodland, and four sisters, Phyllis Gertge of Ft. Morgan, CO, Irene Light of Cambridge, NE, Joan Charles of Leadville, CO, and Cathy Esquibel of Topeka, KS.  He was also a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Clara, his sister, Judy, his father-in-law, James Stone, and a brother-in-law, Steve Patterson.

Richard will long be remembered for his sense of humor and fun-loving spirit.  In celebration of his life, visitation will be 3:00-5:30pm MT on Wednesday, November 14th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church followed by a vigil and rosary at 7:30pm MT at the church.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00am MT on Thursday, November 15th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.  The family suggests memorials to Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, which may be left at the church or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS 67735.
