Richard Lee Frerichs, age 77, passed away on July 10, 2025, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, Colorado. He was born on January 6, 1948, in Goodland, Kansas to William H. and Thelma (Biggs) Frerichs.
On November 9, 1968, Richard married the love of his life, LaDona Harding, in Goodland, Kansas. Together they built a life centered around family, faith, and community. They were blessed with two children: Bret Frerichs of Goddard, Kansas, and Malissa Sloan of Broomfield, Colorado.
Richard worked for many years in the Goodland community, holding various roles that showcased his strong work ethic and dedication. However, his favorite job by far was serving as a switchman for the Rock Island Railroad. He often looked back on his railroad days with pride, conveying stories from that time.
Richard enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—spending time with family, coaching his kid's baseball and softball teams, and gardening. He was an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a Scout leader for Troop 142 for many years. He was also a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Goodland, where he formed many lifelong friendships.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, LaDona Frerichs; his son Bret Frerichs (Jennifer) of Goddard, KS; his daughter Malissa Sloan (Darren White) of Broomfield, CO; and six beloved grandchildren: Brady Frerichs (Kylie), Brendan Frerichs (Brianna Lorenz), Jett Sloan, Riley, Molly, Maddux Welner and brother-in-law Ronald K. Harding. He is also survived by numerous extended family members and cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Thelma Frerichs; his brother, William R. Frerichs, his grandson, Brock William Frerichs, and his wife’s parents Donald and Jeanne Harding.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the First Christian Church or to Boy Scouts Troop 142 and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave, Goodland KS 67735.
