Lifelong Sherman County, Kansas resident Olinda Hesse, 100, died Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County in Goodland.

She was born on July 17, 1913, in Sydney Nebraska, the daughter of Katie (Bettger) and Henry Peter.  She grew up in Sherman County, Kansas, attending school through the eighth grade, and then working at J.C. Penney in Goodland.

On November 11, 1933, she and Murlin D. McClung were married, and to them was born Shirley Joan on December 29, 1935.  Murlin passed away on October 3, 1981.

On July 28, 1985, she and Jimmy Hesse were married, and they continued to make their home in Goodland.  He passed away October 13, 2002.

She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, needlework, babysitting, helping friends, traveling, and working in her yard.  She was a very good cook and made sure no one ever left hungry.  She enjoyed making bread items like cinnamon, crescent, and dinner rolls, and lots of pies.  Her fried chicken was awesome!  Even past the time that she was able to cook, she loved giving something to people who came to see her, so to that end, her family kept her supplied with 7-Up and candies, so that she could share with her visitors.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her two husbands; sister Edna McClung; brothers Albert Peter, Ted Peter, Reuben Peter, and Gilbert Peter; her daughter Shirley Amack; son-in-law William Cecil; step-son-in-law Kenneth Rose.

Surviving family includes her son-in-law Alvin Amack of St. Francis; step-daughters Mary Lou Rose of Beecher Island; Monda Odell and her husband Cliff of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Connie Bienhoff and her husband Joel of Kensington; grandchildren Pamela Whitson and her husband Doug of Goodland; Mike Cecil of Goodland; numerous step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren Natashia Cecil of Hays, Jennifer Cech and her husband Jason of Salina, and Jason Whitson of Denver, Colorado; .

The funeral will be Wednesday, February 5, at 10:30 AM MT, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Goodland, with Pastor Darian Hybl officiating.  Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.
