Maxine Peter

Longtime Goodland, Kansas resident Maxine B. Peter, 88, died Thursday, October 9, 2014, at Goodland Regional Medical Center.

She was born August 11, 1926, at Prairie View, Kansas, the daughter of Ruth (Smith) and Lambert Lokhorst.  All of her grandparents immigrated from Holland to the United States, and she was proud of her heritage.  She graduated from Prairie View High School in 1944, from Asbury Hospital School of Nursing in Salina, Kansas, in 1947, and became a Registered Nurse on September 27, 1947.  She served as a nurse at Boothroy Memorial Hospital in Goodland for twenty-one years.

On December 31, 1949, she and Wane C. Peter were married at the First Christian Church in Goodland, and to them were born two daughters Pamela Ann and Lynette Kay.  She was a member of the Goodland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, in which she volunteered her knitting skills creating keepsake caps for many newborns through the years.

Preceding her in death were her husband Wane C. Peter, who died July 14, 2001; her parents; and sister Alberta Greving.

Surviving family includes her daughters Pamela Schmidt and her husband Greg of Catharine, Kansas; Lynette Keeshan and her husband Rex of Genoa, Nebraska; four grandsons Eric Schmidt, Ryan Schmidt and his wife Jennifer, Kyle Schmidt, and Graham Martin and his wife Kaley; three step-grandchildren Abbie Keeshan, Matt Keeshan and his wife Abbey, Bethany Keeshan; five great-grandchildren Catherine Schmidt, Evelyn Schmidt, Sophie Schmidt, Mason Wane Schmidt, and Gabriel Rehbein.

Friends may share respects on Monday, October 13, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland.

The graveside service will be Tuesday, October 14, at 1:30 PM MT, at the Goodland Cemetery, with Reverend Lew Van Der Wege officiating.  Burial will be in the Goodland Cemetery.  The memorial service at Koons Chapel will follow the graveside service.

Memorials may be designated to Goodland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary or Goodland Regional Medical Center, and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS  67735-1555.
