Harold Van Vleet

November 9, 1927 — April 29, 2014

Lifelong Goodland, Kansas resident, Harold L. Van Vleet, 86, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in Goodland at Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County.

He was born November 9, 1927, in Brighton, Colorado, the son of Margaret E. (Scarrow) and George A. Van Vleet.  He attended schools in Goodland and earned his GED.  He served his country in the United States Navy.

On July 8, 1955, he and Emma E. Everett were married and they made their home in Goodland.  He worked for the U. S. Government, for USD 352 as a bus driver, and as a farmer.

His memberships included First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Senior Center.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers Charles “Malcolm” and Richard, son-in-law Mark K. Brunworth, granddaughter Julia Van Vleet; brother-in-laws, Merlyn Blue, Otho Welcher and Kenneth Smith, and sister-in-law Patsy Van Vleet.

Surviving family includes his wife Emma Van Vleet; son George Van Vleet and his wife Mary Ann, all of Goodland; daughters Dianna Briney and her husband Mike of Hays; Susan Brunworth of Richmond, Missouri; son Robert Van Vleet of New York, New York; six grandchildren Kristin Herl and her husband Jeremy of Hays; Allan Briney of Pratt; Justin Van Vleet and his wife Crystal; Brandon Van Vleet and his wife Eryn, all of Goodland; Ella Brunworth of Kansas City, Missouri; Alea Brunworth of Richmond Missouri; four great-grandchildren Tailynn and Ryker Van Vleet, Kamleigh Van Vleet, and Quinn Herl; two sisters Esther Smith of Carthage, Mississippi; Wilma Blue of West Valley, Utah; brother Ronald Van Vleet; and sister-in-law Marjorie Van Vleet, both of Goodland.

The funeral service will be Saturday, May 3, at 10:30 AM MT, at First Christian Church in Goodland, with Reverend Carol Edling Jolly officiating.  Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Friends may share their respects on Friday, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland.

Memorials may be designated to the First Christian Church and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS  67735-1555.
