Elsie Garrett

Goodland, Kansas resident Elsie S. Garrett, 94, died Sunday, February 17, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County in Goodland.

She was born January 17, 1919, in Offerle, Kansas, the daughter of Anna Augusta (Averill) and George Henry Sire.  She graduated with the class of 1936 from Offerle High School, and with the class of 1940 from Fort Hays State College, with a degree in home economics.   As a teacher, she held positions in Shallow Water, Kansas and Clayton, Kansas, before becoming a staff member and later the head of the home economics department with the Los Angeles, California schools.  She retired from her teaching career in 1974.

In 1942, she and David Butler were married in Clayton, and he preceded her in death in 1943, as a result of his military service on a submarine.  In 1959, she and Frank Garrett were married, and he preceded her in death in 1967.

After her retirement in 1974, she moved to Sun City, Arizona, and traveled extensively with friends, in both the United States and abroad.  Hobbies that she enjoyed were cats, golf, and bridge.  In 2007, she moved to Goodland to be closer to relatives.  She lived at Wheat Ridge Acres Retirement Community until 2009, when she transferred Good Samaritan Society.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two husbands, and two sisters Josephine Randall and Delila Hulsey.

Surviving family includes her sister Eva Lou Selby and her husband Bill of Brewster; brother Alva Sire and his wife Rosa of Fountain, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

Regarding Elsie’s wishes, there will be no memorial services.  Inurnment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California, beside her husband Frank Garrett.

Memorials may be designated to Hospice Services of Sherman County or Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County, and may be left at or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS  67735-1555.  Online condolences:  www.koonsfuneralhome.com
