Dorothy Heigert Cole

November 17, 1931 — March 25, 2016

Wheat Ridge, Colorado resident Dorothy Ann (Stegman) Heigert Cole, 84, died Friday, March 25, 2016, at Mountain Vista Assisted Living in Wheat Ridge.

She was born November 17, 1931, at Park, Kansas, the daughter of Agnes Frances (Kuhn) and John Caspar Stegman.  Dorothy attended first through seventh grades at Park, and then after the family’s move to Goodland, she continued school in Goodland, graduating with the class of 1949 from Sherman Community High School in Goodland, Kansas.

She and Bernard P. “Benny” Hiegert were married in September of 1950, and he preceded her in death, dying in the Korean War on January 30, 1951.  In 1953, she enrolled at Fort Hays State Teachers College in Hays, Kansas.  In 1954, she moved to Pasadena, California, and began employment with Pacific Telephone Company, working as a long distance call file accounting clerk.  In January of 1956, she transferred to Denver, Colorado, to the accounting department of Mountain Bell as a billing clerk.  In 1962, she was promoted to management, which included supervising various accounting jobs and people.  In addition, she was the liaison between the human resources department and the accounting managers and the CWA Union.   On July 29, 1966, she and Wilbur B. Cole were married in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She retired in February of 1986.

Preceding her in death were her parents; siblings Albert Stegman, Viola Stegman, Richard ‘Dick’ Stegman, Herbert Stegman, Carolina Hatfield; her husband Wilbur B. Cole, who died July 25, 2001.

Surviving family includes her sister Barbara Swanson of Jefferson City, Missouri; step-children Daniel Cole and his wife Sandy of Franklin, Tennessee; Jana Lou Cole of Aurora, Colorado; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 2, at 10:30 AM MT, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland, with Father Norbert Dlabal presiding.  Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Vigil will be Friday, April 1, at 6:30 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland.
Friends may share their respects on Friday, April 1, beginning at 5:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel.

Memorials may be designated to St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Arvada, Colorado, or OLPH Catholic Church in Goodland, and may be left at the services, or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS  67735-1555.
