Doris LaVaughn Mote, 83, passed away at Hope Springs in Sharon Springs, Kansas on May 15, 2026. She was born on December 15, 1942 to Murle and Dorothy (Cooley) Wallace in Dodge City, KS.
Doris and Wallace were married on May 24, 1959 at the Weskan United Methodist Church. They were 9 days short of being married 67 years. To this union two children were born, Debora (Debbie) and Dennis.
Doris lived a full and remarkable life, known by all for her sweet spirit, and her love of family. Her early years were filled with raising her family and being a homemaker. Once the kids started school, she entered the workforce at both the local grocery stores, worked in the bakery for many years, was a babysitter from home, was a courier for First National Bank, and helped Hennick Lumber with their bookkeeping.
Doris’ kids, grandkids, and great grandkids were the joy of her life. She treasured the time spent with them and looked forward to their visits.
Doris enjoyed cooking, baking (her pies were amazing), craftmaking, sewing, crocheting, and quilting. Doris and Wallace along with her sister Mary and husband Don started a Custom Quilting business which they ran for multiple years. This venture evolved into a craft making and quilting business they named “Wood-n-Hook”. Doris enjoyed all these hobbies, but her passion was quilting. She helped many local women learn the craft and especially enjoyed teaching her daughter and granddaughters.
She is survived by her husband Wallace of Sharon Springs, KS, her children Debbie (George) Rains of Wallace, KS, Dennis (Bonnie) Mote of Sharon Springs, KS, sisters Frances Hickman of Sharon, Springs, KS, Joan Tubbs of Tribune, KS, brothers Kenneth (Emma) Wallace of San Diego, CA, Carl Lynn (Sally Sayner) Wallace, of Cleveland, OH, 7 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents Murle and Dorothy, one grandson Garrett Mote, Sister Thelma and husband Earl Northern, Brother Milton and wife Helen Wallace, Brother Gordon and wife Peggy Wallace, Sister Mary Keihl, Brother Donald Wallace, and Brother-in-laws Vernon Wertz and Stanley Tubbs.
Memorial contributions may be designated to Wallace County Amusement Association or to the Wallace County EMS and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave, Goodland KS 67735.
