Carl Bowen

Lifelong Goodland, Kansas resident Carl E. Bowen, 83, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society—Sherman County in Goodland.

He was born August 15, 1930, at Goodland, the son of Jessie Elva (Moore) and Homer Thomas Bowen.  He attended Goodland Schools, until his father’s death, when he started working full time to help support his family.  He worked for Rex Road Company, and helped build the curb and gutter on the streets of Goodland.

On January 20, 1951, he and Shirley Irene Talley were married in Goodland, where they made their home.  He served his country in the United States Army from September 27, 1951 through June 25, 1953, during the Korean War.  After returning to Goodland he worked for Carroll Oil Company for sixteen years.  Later he operated a trash service, managed the Derby Station, and worked for USD 352, retiring in 1984.  During his retirement, he worked part-time at the Goodland Elks Lodge and at the Veterans of Foreign Wars—Lowell Coleman Post 1133.  His memberships included the First United Methodist Church, Goodland Elks Lodge 1528, and lifetime member of the VFW.

Preceding him in death were his wife Shirley Bowen, who died November 14, 2004; his parents; and two brothers Verl Bowen and Homer Bowen.

Surviving family includes his four children Susan Scott and her husband Rodney; Bill Bowen, all of Goodland; Joan Underhill and her husband Frank of Liberal; Carol Underhill and her husband Keith of Hill City; ten grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; sister Velda Bramer of Goodland; two  sisters-in-law Betty Hines of Goodland; Linda Goalden of McPherson, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, June 30, at 10:00 AM MT, at the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, with Dr. Chet Ross and Gordon Pettibone, Certified Lay Servant, officiating.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.
Friends may share their respects on Sunday, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland.
Memorials may be designated to First United Methodist Church, and may be left at or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N Main, Goodland, KS  67735-1555.
