Bernice G. David

July 19, 1930 — May 8, 2023

Sharon Springs, Kansas

Bernice Georgine (Dechant) David, 92, of Sharon Springs, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs, Kansas.

Bernice was born July 19, 1930, to Joseph and Paulina (Leikam) Dechant in Hays, Kansas.  She was the youngest of 12 children.

She graduated from Wallace County High School in 1949.  Following graduation, she began working at Floyd’s Recreation and Snack Bar where she met and worked for her future husband.  She married Floyd David on May 29, 1950.  To this union two children were born, Debra and Marion (Skip) David.

When Floyd and Bernice sold Floyd’s Recreation and Snack Bar she worked in the grocery store meat market for 20 years and later did bookkeeping for the grocery store.  After Floyd developed Parkinson’s Disease, her main priority in life was to lovingly care for her husband.

She was a lifetime member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church and spent many years as a member of the Women’s Altar Society for the Church.

Bernice enjoyed bowling for many years in the local bowling league and participated in bowling tournaments in Kansas and other states.  She played music by ear on the piano and organ.  She loved playing bingo and had great fun playing slot machines.  Her favorite NFL football team was the Denver Broncos, and she was passionate about Kansas University Jayhawk basketball.  She and Floyd loved playing cards (pitch, pinochle and cribbage) with family and friends.

Bernice was a devoted, faithful and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter and sister.  She treasured the time she spent with her family.  She loved attending school activities and sporting events in which her children and grandchildren participated.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd, her parents, 3 brothers and their spouses, and 8 sisters and their spouses.

Bernice will be greatly missed by all those who loved her.  She is survived by her children: daughter, Debra Wright of Spring, Texas; son, Skip David and his wife, Debbie, of Sharon Springs; a sister-in-law: Nettie (David) Lock of Onaga, Kansas; four grandchildren: Cody Wright (Carlos) of Menlo Park, California; Lance Wright (Jennifer) of Spring, Texas; Corey David (Lace) of Sharon Springs, Kansas; and Christy Kuhn (Jared) of Hays, Kansas; five great-grandchildren: Jessica Bair, Erikson and Violet David, Kiefer Kuhn, and Avah Wright; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.
